Save the open fire for the chestnuts...

Open flames on candles are one of the leading causes of house fires. They are more popular this time of year and if you're not used to them, they are easily forgotten and left unattended. There are some great battery operated candles on the market now with the same fantastic effect. Best to invest in these and they even last longer.

Sparkle for the right reasons

Remember to use fire safe Christmas lights and leave the vintage Christmas lights for the museums. LED lights now come in less intense brightness settings and generate little to no heat compared with the old bulb types. Remember if you are going to use these, and you have a real tree, keep your tree well watered so as to avoid any fire hazzards from dry pines. Oh, and before installing and turning lights on check for frayed wires, damaged sockets, and gaps in the insulation. If they're damaged, toss them.

Be Cautious on Ladders

A lot of decorations will require a ladder this season. Use a proper ladder and not a chair or box! The base should be 1 foot away from the wall for every 4 feet of height. Keep your hips between the rails and don't over reach.
